March 20th, 2010 - Cheeseburger in Paradise BBQ Fundraiser for Cancer House of Hope

The Cancer House of Hope will be holding a fundraiser at the Castle of Knights at 1599 Memorial Dr in Chicopee on Mar 20, 2010. Music will be provided by local favorites, Changes in Latitude. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at the Cancer House of Hope on Court St in Westfield or by calling (413) 562-0110. Show runs from 7:00Pm until 11:00PM.

March 20th, 2010 - Rev. Andre Patenaude, M.S. ('Fr. Pat') Concert

Holy Trinity Church, 335 Elm Street, Westfield, MA will be having a concert in the church on Saturday, March 20th from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Rev. Andre Patenaude, M.S. began his singing career as a child at a local church in Fall River, MA. As a La Salette Missionary, he has made his music an integral part of his unique ministry of healing and has made known the message of La Salette to millions worldwide. He has carved a name for himself internationally as a composer, singer and recording artist and is known worldwide as "Fr. Pat". There is no admission fee but "Free Will" donations will be accepted. Spring is in the air - the birds are singing, the days are growing longer and brighter, and our bodies are starting stretch their roots deep into the soft, warm earth while our branches reach up to the sun. This workshop will focus on awakening the mind and body, shaking off our long winter’s nap and getting our juices flowing again. Bring a notebook or journal and an intention or two - a New Year’s resolution you’re wrestling with, one of the seeds you gathered during the autumn workshop, or any dream you’d like to see brought to fruition this year - and we’ll clear some mental and physical space inside with some breathwork, some restorative poses, guided meditations, and journaling so we can plant the seeds of our intentions and nurture our dreams into being. Open yourself up to some new possibilities.

Therapeutic Yoga for Beginners is for anyone just starting out with yoga or for those who have ongoing muscular pain or tension requiring special attention. It's also appropriate for those who like a gentle to moderate class. The class is taught by instructors versed in Structural Yoga, which is a style of yoga focused on adapting yoga to an individual's body and specific needs. The theme of the class often focuses around strengthening the back, and releasing tension in the neck and shoulders.

March 27th, 2010 - Spring Music Hall Concert/Dance with PRYDEIN at School St Bistro

Westfield on Weekends and the School Street Bistro are proud to welcome the acclaimed Celtic Rock band, PRYDEIN, to the School St Bistro Music Hall as part of WoW's Spring Music Hall Concert Series. Following up last year's inaugural smash Wintergreen Days success with Seven Nations, we are proud to present another blood boiling bagpiping Celtic music legend. Burlington Vermont based Prydein has been pleasing fans all over New England and other parts of this wide world since 1995 and are still going strong. Josephine Sarnelli, WinterGreen Chair, first heard Prydein at the Scottish Games. “Of all things, they were playing the most beautiful version of Amazing Grace,” she exclaims. Aron Garceau, Prydein’s guitarist, explains, “Forever a tune of funerals and sad occasions, Amazing Grace, if you listen to the words, is a most uplifting and upbeat song. Why it has become a song of sadness and loss, we'll never know, but Prydein decided to take it back. Pairing it with the blood boiling anthem Scotland the Brave seemed a perfect marriage and the arrangement has become the Margaritaville of Prydein.” When asked about the origin of their band’s name, Aron muses, “Led Zeppelin was already taken, as was the Tanahill Weavers. The Led Weavers sounded pretty lame, as did the Tanahill Zeppelins, so one afternoon, we found the name in a book somewhere. It was actually pretty uneventful. That name was Prydein (don't worry, we didn't know what it meant or how to pronounce it either). After we agreed upon a pronunciation (pry' den) and tried to figure out the whole "I" before "E" thing, we finally decided that the Welsh language was pretty strange.” And on the pipes is Iain Mac Harg, son of a world-renowned bagpipe builder. Iain grew up listening to the music of the Battlefield Band and the Tanahill Weavers. He has been to Scotland to compete in the Pipe Band World Championships twice. He also plays flute and tin whistle. The band is rounded out with Andy Smith on bass and Caleb Bronz on drums.

The doors open at 6:00 with Jon Berman on solo saxophone. Pyrdein begins at 7:00. The cost for this concert is only $15 in advance, or $20 at the Tickets can be purchased at the Bistro or online by clicking here.

March 27th, 2010 - Westfield River Symposium: Green Energy in Our Watershed

Will feature speakers and exhibitors on green energy alternatives such as wind, solar, hydro, and bioenergy. The program will explore the environmental costs and benefits of these options locally and nationally. People looking for ways to reduce energy consumption in their homes and lives now will find a number of practical actions they can.

Following registration at 8:00 a.m. Alan Nogee of the Union of Concerned Scientists, a nationally respected authority on clean energy, will present “Climate & Energy Solutions: A National 2030 Blueprint” in his keynote address. Participants then can choose from programs offered by seven speakers and visit exhibits from various environmental organizations and companies involved in green energy. In the afternoon an outing to visit a new Wind Turbine in Otis will be offered. Sponsored by WRWA with support from Westfield State College, the symposium is open to the public free of charge. Rising to national prominence as a feminist leader in 1969, Steinem was a founder of New York Magazine in the 1960’s and broke ground in 1963 with an investigative report on how the employed women of Playboy were treated, which was made into a 1985 movie, A Bunny’s Tale. In the 1970’s, she became a leading political leader and one of the most important voices of the Second-Wave feminism, the women’s rights movement of the 1960’s and 70’s. In 1971, along with other feminist reformers, she founded the National Women’s Political Caucus. The next year, Steinem became the founding editor and publisher of “Ms.” Magazine, which brought feminist issues to the forefront and became the movement’s most influential publication. Steinem actively campaigned for the Equal Rights Amendment, in addition to other laws and social reforms that promoted equality. She also founded/co-founded many groups, including the Women’s Action Alliance, the Coalition of Labor Union Women, the Women's Media Center, and Choice USA. She helped create the Take Our Daughters to Work Day.

Today, Steinem is considered one of the most important feminist reformers of the Second-Wave of the Women’s Movement in the United States. She has had several of her books become bestsellers, and has been published in many magazines and newspapers here and in other countries. Biography magazine listed her as one of the 25 most influential women in America. In 1993, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, New York. She is currently at work on Road to the Heart: America As if Everyone Mattered, a book about her more than thirty years on the road as a feminist organizer; and with the Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College on a project to document the grassroots origins of the U.S. women's movement.

April 1st, 2010 - First Thursdays at the Athenaeum w/ Peter Biedermann

On April 1, acoustic guitarist Peter Biedermann (www.peterbiedermann.com) will be performing. Peter has been writing and performing original instrumental music for over 30 years. While his music covers a number of genres in the electronic and acoustic fields, his performance on April 1 will focus on original acoustic fingerstyle pieces in unique tunings on various 6 and 12 string guitars. Peter lives in Butler, NJ.

April 7th, 2010 - Rob Peck at Westfield Athenaeum April 7 - Postponed indefinitely

Rob Peck's show on April 7 has been postponed until further notice. Rob Peck will be doing a presentation at the Athenaeum's Lang Auditorium on Wed., April 7 at 7 p.m. Rob will be presenting a program entitled "Keeping Up in a Down Economy" that will offer comic relief after a long, cold winter and act as a stress reliever as the end of tax season nears. The program will be co-sponsored by the Athenaeum, WOW and the Westfield BID.

The annual Book Sale, sponsored by the Friends of the Athenaeum, will be held this year on April 8th, 9th, and 10th. Show begins at 4:00PM on Apr 8th with $3 charge for early admission. Shows on Apr 9 and 10 will be held from 8:30AM until 5:00PM on the 9th and 8:30 AM unitl 3:00PM on the 10th. The Athenaeum is accepting donations of used books. The event will be held in the Lang Auditorium.
